Veterinary Surgeon (Equine)
Erik Belloy
DVM MRCVS
Erik has been an equine vet in the UK since 1989, and he became a partner at H&J in 1997. He was born in Belgium, and qualified at Ghent Veterinary School. He has owned horses from a very young age, and used to compete in the dressage arena. Erik's main clinical interests are orthopaedics, back problems, farriery and dentistry. He is passionate about ensuring that the hospital provides our patients and clients high quality care through having the best, well-motivated workforce. In his spare time, Erik enjoys tennis and cooking.

Luisa Smith
BVMS PhD CertES (Soft Tissue) DipECVS MRCVS
Luisa is an equine veterinary surgeon and one of the three partners at the practice. She graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2000, and since then has spent her time in specialist equine practices in North America and the UK, before completing a surgical residency and PhD. She holds an RCVS certificate in Equine Surgery, a European diploma in large animal surgery and is one of our three equine Offical Veterinarians. Luisa has published multiple papers and case reports and has lectured widely. Luisa oversees our equine hospital patients and her special interests include abdominal and laparoscopic surgery, sport horse welfare and rehabilitation. She is one of the official vets at Chelmsford City Racecourse. Luisa is also a vetGDP mentor and works closely with our interns and junior veterinary associates. When not at work she is training or relaxing with her team of agility dogs or diving at the bottom of the ocean!

Peter Van Den Brande

After graduating from Ghent University, Belgium, Peter embarked on a 30-year career as a small animal surgeon in Essex. Having joined H&J in 2016, Peter became a partner in the practice, heading the small animal team one year later. Family and work have always been the pillars of Peter's life, only occasionally overtaken by the view of a new racing bicycle!

Jane Jackson

Jane is a small animal and equine veterinary surgeon. She qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 1979, and is a regular broadcaster in veterinary matter on Radio Esses. Her particular interests are skin disease and medical conditions.

Thomas Schulze

Thomas is a senior small animal associate and graduated from the Freie Universitat Berlin Veterinary School in 1995. After spending three years working in a small clinic in Nottingham, he joined H&J in 1998 where he continued developing a special interest in heart diseases. Thomas gained the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Cardiology in 2002. He has since been collaborating with veterinary practices in Essex and Germany offering services of second opinion (referrals) on cardiovascular diseases in dogs and cats. In addition to discipline of cardiology, he also has a keen interest in diagnostic imaging and internal medicine. During his spare time, Thomas loves playing tennis and jazz guitar. He also likes to read and listen to music. Four children keep his wife and him on their toes making sure there is never a dull moment in the house.

Jessica Spanton

Jess is an equine vet and has been with the practice since 2007. She holds RCVS certificates in equine internal and stud medicine, an RCVS diploma in equine internal medicine and is one of our three equine Official Veterinarians. Jess has been published in parasitology and gastrointestinal health and is continuing research into colic, she is also an assessor for advanced practitioners. Jess runs the stud service and has a particular interest in internal medicine. She has developed our foal ICU unit and expanded our advanced reproductive and medicine services. When not at work she is in the garden with the family.

Suzanne Bettles

Suzy is a small animal veterinary surgeon and graduated from Edinburgh University Veterinary School in 2013. She joined us as a Housevet, and upon completion of her internship agreed to remain with us as an Associate Veterinary Surgeon. Her particular interests are small animal and equine medicine.

Agata Kucko
DVM MRCVS
Agata graduated from the University of Zagreb in 2018, as a student she volunteered in the equine faculty clinics and took multiple externships in equine hospitals in Belgium, Germany and Slovenia. Agata joined the practice in 2019 as an intern and subsequently stayed on as an equine vet. She has a keen interest in dentistry and geriatric medicine, and is passionate about her patients. Agata is currently undertaking an advanced practitioner certificate in dentistry, and is able to perform both routine and advanced dental procedures. Agata is also one of our three equine Official Veterinarians. When not at work she is either tending her vegetable patch, looking after her retired racing Thoroughbred or walking her black lab.

Amelia Covell

Amelia is a small animal vet who joined the H&J family in 2021, having graduated from the University of Bristol in 2020. Amelia's particular interests are in dermatology, including ear and skin disease, and internal medicine. She has always been determined to provide exceptional chronic pain management and end of life care for her geriatric patients with terminal illness. Amelia move to Ongar to live on her partners farm and is kept busy with their two labradors, Rosie and Lou, but in her spare time she enjoys staying active in the outdoors and visiting family in Yorkshire.

Charlotte joined H&J in July 2021 as a Housevet and is now a small animal and equine vet at the hospital. Charlotte studied at the University of Liverpool and graduated in July 2021. She is interested in all aspects of small animal and equine veterinary medicine. In her spare time she enjoys baking, horse riding, and exploring the local area.

Georgia graduated in 2020 from the Royal Veterinary College. She started her career in London then moved to H&J in July 2023. Her main interests are ultrasound, medicine and management of geriatric patients. At home she has her own geriatric cat, Brie, a 16 year old British shorthair. In her spare time she enjoys reading, knitting and crochet.

James is a small animal vet who graduated from Edinburgh University in 2003. James has a strong interest in small animal surgery including orthopaedics. As a VetGDP advisor he has a passion for supporting new veterinary graduates in their fledgling careers. James enjoys spending time with his partner travelling, visiting castles, and learning wintersports.

Kim recently joined H&J in June 2024 but this is not the first time she has been with us; Kim first came to H&J as a vet student 15 years ago. She then spent the next 13 years in a small animal practice in Essex, where she attained her Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) certificate.
Outside of work, Kim has 3 boys, who keep her busy, along with 2 rescue cats and 3 chickens.
Kim likes running and has previously completed a 50km ultra race.

Born in a little seaside town in Greece, and studied at vet school in Thessaloniki, Roula came to the UK in June 2005 to work for "couple of years" that turned out to be decades!
Roula has always worked with small animals, in various practices mainly within Essex where she has been living with her husband, daughter and a sweet and funny boxer dog, Rubini. In her free time, Roula enjoys long walks with her dog , reading, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

Vlad has been part of the H&J family since 2022, when he joined as a Small Animal vet. Originally hailing from Romania, where he graduated in 2000, Vlad first joined the UK veterinary world in 2017, and worked in various practices and referral centres before joining H&J. Vlad has had a few cats over the years, but currently has just the one; a 5 year old ginger rescue called Boss.

Cristina is a small animal vet and graduated in Barcelona, Spain in 1995. She moved to the UK and worked in Derby in a small animal clinic. Once settled in Essex, she worked in a small animal practice in Chelmsford until joining H&J in November 2023. When not looking after pets, Cristina enjoys her hobbies: languages, travel, photography, reading, swimming and tennis, most of which she shares with her husband and four kids.

Head Veterinary Nurse (Equine)
Michelle Wilson EVN/RVN
Michelle joined the practice in 1991, she has achieved both her equine and small animal veterinary nursing qualifications whilst at the practice and is now our head nurse. She oversees both the equine and small animal nursing teams, manages the day to day care of patients in the equine hospital, trains student nurses and mentors our veterinary interns. She also lectures at the Open College of Equine Studies and is studying for her nursing certificate in anaesthesia. Michelle has a particular interest in welfare cases, anaesthesia and reproductive work and is determined in her support of colleagues and patients alike. When not at work she can be found with her horses and ever growing flock of sheep!

Clare is the Deputy Head nurse, and started at H&J on placement in 2007, whilst studying for her Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing at the Royal Veterinary College. She qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2010, becoming Deputy Head Nurse at 2016. Clare enjoys all aspects of nursing, but her main passions are radiography, and mentoring the student nurses. She spends most of her spare time running around after her two children! She also loves to spend time with friends and family. She has a cat called Lily, and a rescue puppy called Chase.

Sam Brown RVN
Sam joined the H&J family in 1993 as an equine nursing assistant where she stayed for over 3 years before moving to the small animal clinic in order to train for her nursing qualifications. Same gained her certificate in 1999 and worked as an RVN at Blackmore for a number of years before taking the role of supervisor at our Billericay branch where you will still find her today. Sam is also a clinical coach, acting as mentor to student nurses, and has just had the pleasure of seeing her third consecutive student take their final exams. Outside of work, Sam has a keen interest in wildlife rehabilitation centre in South Africa. An experience she says she will never forget. These days she will invariably be found out walking her dogs, Piper and Maisie.

Alyson started as a degree student at H&J in 2009. After graduating she worked at a first opinion practice in Southend. Alyson re-joined the H&J family in 2016 as nurse clinic co-ordinator. Alyson has keen interest in our patient care, including nutrition, diabetes management, and dental prevention. In her spare time, Alyson enjoys spending time with friends, family and her two fur babies, Missy and Flossie.

Vikki started at H&J in 2017 as a newly graduated veterinary nurses. After working here for a few years she found a passion for rehabilitation which led her to complete the level 3 certificate in canine hydrotherapy, and to start up a rehab clinic in the practice. When Vikki is not at work she is usually found at the stables with her horse Harley, walking her dog Cassie, or spending time with her friends and family.

Sophie Willis RVN
Sophie started out at H&J by volunteering 2 days a week in January 2016, where she was then offered a part-time equine nursing assistant position. Sophie was then asked to cover some shifts in the small animal department which is where she found her love for small animals. Sophie started her small animal nursing diploma in 2016 and qualified as an RVN in 2020. Sophie is also a clinical coach and enjoys mentoring her student nurses through their training. Sophie has a keen interest in Emergency and Critical care, and Paediatrics, but enjoys every aspect of being a veterinary nurse. In her spare time, you'll find Sophie at the stables with her dutch warmblood called Rio, walking her french bulldogs, or binge watching Netflix!

Andrea is one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, having qualified with us in 1998. After working at other practices, travelling, and having a family, she returned back to us in 2017. Andrea enjoys all aspects of nursing, especially surgery. In her spare time, Andrea enjoys being with her family and friends, travelling, and CrossFit. She has a cat, Sausage, and a Labrador dog called Dexter.

​Kathy started working for H&J as a part-time assistant in 2001. She completed her small animal nursing qualification in 2004, and then gained her certificate in hydrotherapy in 2008. After going on maternity leave for her first child in 2-16, she now works part-time doing hydrotherapy and rehabilitation appointments. Outside of work, her time is taken up with her 2 children, border collie dog, chickens, and her horse.

Gill is one of our qualified veterinary nurses, she joined H&J as a student veterinary nurse in 2014. Gill particularly enjoys nursing critical care patients, and enjoys nurse clinics. In her spare time Gill enjoys a variety of sports and walking her dog.

Harriet is one of our qualified veterinary nurses, having started at H&J in 2008 as a nursing assistant in equine. Harriet then decided to move to small animal and after a short break decided to progress onto doing her small animal nurse training. She has a keen interest in anaesthetics and emergency care, but enjoys tackling all aspects of nursing. Outside of work Harriet enjoys spending time with her rescue saluki Lola, and hacking around the countryside on her pony.

Chloe qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2022 after beginning her veterinary journey in a busy first opinion practice in 2018. Before joining H&J, Chloe did night shifts for 18 months as she has a keen interest in emergency and critical care. When not working, Chloe enjoys spending time with family, friends and her dog, Frank. She also enjoys travelling and baking.

Emily started working at H&J as a nursing assistant at the beginning of 2018, helping with both small animal and equine. Emily then decided to specialise in small animals and started nursing training at the beginning of June 2021. Emily has a special interest in emergency nursing. In her spare time, Emily can be found riding her Dutch Warmblood, Pebbles, walking her three little terriers, and spending lots of time socialising with friends.

April started at H&J in July 2022 and is currently training as an equine veterinary nurse. Before joining the practice April worked as an assistant stud manager on a local sport horse stud. She particularly enjoys reproductive and foal work and brings a wealth of experience to our Repro team. When not at work April is enjoying her rescue horse DW or walking her dog.

Lydia started at H&J in November 2015 as an equine nursing assistant. She is now training to become an equine veterinary nurse. Lydia enjoys emergency care and colic surgery. She is also involved in providing weight clinics at livery yards and laser therapy to our equine patients. Outside of work Lydia is busy caring for her own animals, her traditional cob Gerrard, and her rescue dogs, Bow and Hank.

Courtney started working at H&J in March 2021. being a new mum to my children before joining H&J
Prior to this she worked on event and livery yards where she studied to be freelance coach and gain all her qualifications. She absolutely loved teaching, seeing the riders achieve their goals, especially the children. But as a new mum, it just didn’t work for her so decided to have a career change and try something she’s always wanted to do.
Courtney says she absolutely loves caring for animals. Her main passion is horses but she has dogs, and loves spending time with them, when she isn’t too busy being a new mum

After completing a degree in equine behavioural science in 2022, Grace joined H&J as an equine nursing assistant. She is now looking forward to beginning her training as a veterinary nurse. In my spare time, Grace enjoys showing her traditional cob Paolo as well as caring for my two cockerpoos Buddy and Ralphie and house bunnies Munchkin and Bubba. Grace also spends a lot of the Spring time lambing at a friend's farm.

Jo started at H&J in 1997, five years later she left to start a family but we are thrilled that she returned in August 2021 as a nursing assistant. In the interim Jo has worked in both professional dressage and showjumping yards and has a keen interest in sport horse welfare. When not at work Jo can be found ferrying her girls to dance lessons, walking the dogs or running.

Laura Purser
Laura joined the H&J Team in 1998 as a part-time nursing assistant. Laura subsequently completed a degree and PhD in Forensic Science, continuing to work for the company around her studies. During her time with company she has worked in both small animal and equine departments and across all three of our branches. In 2014, Laura took on a management role which evolved into Practice and Operations Manager, in 2020 she completed her postgraduate certificate in Veterinary Business Management with the University of Liverpool. At home she has three rescue cats, Jeeves, Wooster and Bug. Jeeves and Wooster are volunteer blood donors for the practice and have also assisted staff in animal handling training. Bug is a law unto herself, she was hand-reared by one of our receptionists and despite being the smallest in the household most definitely rules the roast!

Kat joined H&J in May 2022, having spent the previous 20 years working in musical theatre in London's glittering West End! Kat and her husband are the proud paw-rents of their 6 year old mini dachshund. A qualified Personal Trainer, SCUBA diver and flautist, outside of work, Kat also loves motorbikes, Lego, swimming and playing the guitar.

Shortly after completing a Level 3 diploma in Animal Management, Becca joined H&J in 2015 as an apprentice, studying Business Administration and since then has worked her way up to Office Manager. Animals have always been a passion, and Becca has had many pets over the years, including rabbits, ducks, chickens and hamsters. At the moment, Becca is mum to two dogs, Toby and Rolo, Tiggy the cat (who has hand reared here at H&J) and Elvis the skinny pig. In her spare time, Becca enjoys weight training and exploring new cities with friends.

Munchie started at H&J in 1988, at the tender age of 16! And she is still here 35 years later! Qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1991, after spending 6 months training at Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA), she nursed for 11 years before taking on the role of Stock Manager, dealing with daily ordering all stock and medications, including SICs, allergy vaccines and much more! In her spare time, Munchie enjoys socialising with friends, trying to keep fit and generally taking part in crazy stuff as you can see in the headshot!

Jes joined H&J in Nov 2020 as a part time office junior and covering reception for additional hours until a year later when she became a permanent full-time office administrator keeping occasional lunch time cover on reception.
Jes's spare time is kept busy with 4 Italian Spinone’s Ava, Luna, Tiga & Gracie and horse Eirik who you may see out at local competitions. Don’t get upset if she doesn't recognise you - it may be her twin that you know!

Maia joined the admin team at H&J in 2022. She enjoys competing in British Showjumping with her Irish Sports Horse, Lux, and looking after her eight (!) family horses and ponies. Maia also has two dogs, Teddy, the Yorkiepoo and Bo, the Morkie" Outside of work she LOVES going on holiday, and the cinema when she get's chance.

Hannah joined H&J in 2018. During her time here, she has worked on reception, as a nursing assistant and has now joined the admin team in the office. She has also been working part-time for many years as a groom at her local yard, getting that horsey fix! When not at work, Hannah is kept busy with golden retriever Archie and cats Pops & Bean.

Charlotte is our Laboratory Technician; having qualified with a BSC hons degree in Bioveterinary science in 2022. After working at other practices and in other clinical laboratories, Charlotte joined our team earlier this year. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, spending time with family and friends and her animals.

Abi Whitley
Abi has worked for H&J for the last 5 years both on reception and in debt recovery.
In her spare time she enjoys socializing with friends over good food and loves to visit as many holiday destinations as possible.
Abi has ridden horses since the age of 4, which has fueled the fire and passion for all things horse, to include studying at Writtle College and gaining a national diploma in horse management, and a degree in equine studies with physical therapy. This lead on to qualifications in equine massage.
Abi has owned her own horse, Sukari, a 20 year old thoroughbred mare, for the last 14 years, and rehabilitated her back into work after a tendon tear 8 years ago - many thanks to our Luisa and Michelle!
Abi has 3 rescue cats at home, Evee and Eric from the Cats Protection, with last year seeing the addition of Olive the kitten who was signed over to H&J.

This is one of our old girls, that's seen better days...she's a bit over the hill but not too far away! Jan loves a rescue dog, she has had 10 over the years and encourages many friends and family, to take on these quite often neglected but beautiful creatures. She was a City & Guilds trained Dog Groomer for over 20 years. Jan, her family and friends enjoy walking their dogs together and she believes in the KC Good Citizens Award Scheme.

Charlie has worked for H&J for nearly 2 years after spending 20 years as an HLTA in a primary school. She has 2 girls, Alex & Frankie and 2 fur babies, Norman the Briard and a cat, Reggie. Her spare time is used up on weekends away, going out with friends, the beach and trips to London. The next adventure for Charlie and family is a motorhome so they can tour the UK and Europe with Norman, and show him all the wonderful places they've been and visit some new ones. Charlie says, as long as there is an ice-cream shop and a pub they'll all be happy!

Joy is one of H&J's longest standing Receptionists and her interest in canine behaviour has led to Joy gaining a diploma in the subject. She still studies as our knowledge and understanding of dogs evolves. Joy also organises and runs the H&J puppy evenings.

She used to work full-time at Blackmore and now work at Writtle, mainly part-time.
In the time she has been with H&J, she has had four children but always returned. House & Jackson is like a big family.

Caroline worked in Financial Services for many years before she decided to work in a field that she really enjoys - with nature and animals. Caroline worked for Essex Wildlife Trust with the Barn Owl Project and then the RSPB prior to joining us. She cares deeply about animal welfare and excellent customer service. When she’s not at H&J she enjoys spending time with her family, her two vizslas, Hugo the horse or she’s letting off steam cheering on the Raiders Ice Hockey team!

Jo joined H&J in October 2022, having previously worked in Insurance and Hospitality. She is thoroughly enjoying learning new things everyday and, of course, seeing and cuddling all the furry friends!
Outside of H&J, she is kept busy with two daughters, and in her spare time enjoys family days out, playing netball and exploring new places.

Claire has been with H&J for 11 years. She has 2 dogs; a rottweiler and a German Shepherd. She also has two cats both of which she hand-reared, and a Shire horse. Claire's hobbies are riding and hand-rearing kittens.

Ellee is new to H&J but has always had a passion for animals. She shares 4 horses with her sister which are a huge part of her life. Ellee also loves spending time with her partner and little girl, or reading a good book.

Molly joined House and Jackson in Summer 2022 after graduating university. In her spare time she loves going to the cinema and theatre, and going on holiday whenever she can! When not at work, she can normally be found babysitting her favourite niece and nephew, two German Shepherds!

Pauline has worked at the Practice for 25 years. Before this she had a career in London within the Foreign Exchange and Money Market Trade Support and worked for a short period of time in New York (in the World Trade Centre)
Pauline has owned horses for many years, now enjoys walking and new adventures with Teddy her Yorkshire terrier and loves her garden.

Jade worked at house and Jackson for 4 years as a student vet nurse.
She then became a PA in London for 4 years and is now back at H&J as a receptionist - she just can’t keep away!
Jade has a sprocker spaniel called Poppy and a Russian blue cat called Sky who is an old boy at 16 years old.
Jade's daughter, Pearl, is 2 Years old and is the sassiest princess on this planet!
Jade has been riding horses since she was very young, her main passion. In her spare time, Jade loves socialising with friends.

Anne joined the H&J Team in May 2023 on a part time basis.
In her spare time, Anne is often found socialising with family and friends, or heading into London for a show or a mooch about. Anne has volunteered at the local RDA for the past 6 years and rides at weekends or in the evenings when she can, and often looks after her daughters rescue Saluki for her doggie fix.

​Claire has worked at the practice for 41 years since leaving school, and has owned horses for many years. Claire now spends any spare time she has with her granddaughter.

Stacey joined H&J as part of the reception team in 2020. Outside of work she loves spending time with her horses and her family especially her two young children and her two nephews.

Elaine has been working for H&J for 24 years. Outside of work, Elaine loves long walks with her Labrador Jess, and spending quality time with her grandchildren.

Emma joined the team in July 2023 and is thoroughly enjoying all there is to learn.
Her pets include cat Leo the lion, Skyla the rabbit and the newest addition from the practice as a stray is Jasmine the kitten.
In her spare time, Emma enjoys reading, crocheting and rides for the local Riding for the Disabled group at barrow farm for the last 11 years regularly competing in their shows.

Llanan joined House and Jackson in 2015 whilst studying BSc in Equine Sports therapy and MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy. Recently returning after her 2nd maternity leave and she returned part time and is now kept busy with her 2 children.

Michele joined the practice 6 years ago and works 2 evenings a week at our Blackmore branch. Michele's days are spent looking after her 3 Dressage horses and walking her rescue dog.
