FIREWORK SEASON IS UPON US,  A TIME WHICH CAN BE FRIGHTENING AND STRESSFUL FOR OUR HORSES

Here are a few things you can do to help reduce your horse's stress

  • Check to see if there are any big displays nearby, or if a neighbour is having a party. It helps to be prepared

  • Don't be tempted to ride or exercise your horse whilst the fireworks are being let off

  • Decide whether to stable your horse or leave them in the field. Try to keep them in familiar surroundings with a normal routine , and with any companions who may help them feel secure, as long as they are safe from the firework display area

  • If stabled, ensure they cannot injure themselves in any way—check for protruding nails, string, etc. Hay and a treat ball will help occupy them

  • Leave on a radio playing music, which can be soothing and help mask the sound of fireworks

  • If your horse is staying in their field, check the field is secure, fencing is all in place, and there are no objects lying around on which they may injure themselves

  • Think about scattering hay throughout the field so they will be kept busy by needing to search to graze

  • Consider putting some bright tape on the field fence so the horse can see where the fence is

  • Leave nearby building lights on to help reduce the effect of bright flashes

  • Check on your horse regularly throughout the evening

  • If it is absolutely necessary for you to leave your horse in someone else’s care, ensure you leave specific instructions with them

  • If you think your horse will be really stressed, speak to your vet about medication
